The Trails

ImageNepal offers a superb array of trails for every kind of rider, from the novice to the most experienced biker. We believe biking is all about enjoyment and having fun so we like to mix it up with technical trails, fun offroad sections, long winding down hills and challenging uphill sections. Trails pass through tropical and alpine forests, rural villages, remote farming villages and small towns as well as temples and monasteries, all back dropped by the majestic Himalaya.

To under take mountain biking in Nepal, we recommend you have a good basic fitness level and be able to ride a bike for up to 6 hours in one day.

Kathmandu is a fast developing city and you need to be aware that at some stage during your ride you will encounter traffic. Road and driving conditions in Nepal are well below what you are used to. We take the up most care to minimize time in traffic and ensure your safety. Alas a little bit if mental preparation for Kathmandu’s traffic conditions won’t go astray!

What to Bring

If you intend to go mountain biking in Nepal, we recommend that you bring along comfortable and practical cycling clothes, though you should note that wearing short tight lyric shorts is not always appreciated by the local people so we suggest you to bring some comfortable loose knee length shorts to wear over the top of your lycras. Most times of the year you will be comfortable in short sleeve jersey and shorts. During the monsoon we recommend a light water proof jacket and of course in the winter season you need to bring along long sleeved jerseys and slacks.

On long tours you will have to carry with you the things you need as not all areas are accessed by road so a support vehicle is not always provided. In some cases we can arrange luggage drops every two days or so. You should carry some warm clothes for the night time, camera, personal needs and toiletries. Cycling up hill and off road can be very strenuous so we recommend you to try and keep your pack under 6kg. If bringing your own bike two water cages are a good idea for the summer seasons. You can also consider bringing along a gel seat, your own peddles and shoes and helmet if it will make you more comfortable. We can fit your peddles to our bikes no problems. I f you don’t plan to bring you own bike, don’t worry we have a good selection of top quality, 8 and 9 speed, front suspension mountain bikes on hire and will also provide helmets, basic tool kit, a map and of course the guide…

Mountain Biking Seasons

Mountain biking can be done all year round in Nepal. The winter months run from the middle of November to the middle of March, this time of year can be very cold especially in the evenings. September to November is considered as the optimum time for mountain biking, the trails will all be open after the monsoon and under repair which makes for good fun bumpy riding, the days are fairly mild, with chilly evenings and the views are superb. There will be very little chance of rain during this time. From the middle of November things get very cold and dry,  most country roads and trails have been worn smooth or are very dry and dusty, though biking is still good, views are not always guaranteed and before 10am and after 3pm its bloody freezing! From the middle of February we get a week of drizzle and fog then things begin to hot up right until the monsoon which comes any time after mid May. Day time temperatures can be quite high, the days are sunny and bright, though there are not always mountain views. Its also spring time in Nepal and very beautiful as flowers are in full bloom and the fields are full of green wheat. Its also possible to ride during the monsoon, and in fact if you don’t mind getting muddy and wet it’s a great time to get out there and slip and slide your way down the mountainsides and along the country trails………though if you don’t like leeches then think about coming at another time. The monsoon ends sometime in early September from when we are once again blessed with clear skies and mountain views, from September to mid November it can also get quite hot during the days and evenings.

Happy Biking!
